Many of us have heard of the concept of Mind-Body Medicine and have an idea that there is a connection BUT… how do we effectively apply it so it is not just a flaky idea? At Body-Mind-Soul Coaching we use a simple, natural
5-step process called INside-OWT and educate clients why it works. The principles of INside-OWT can be understood with concepts of Quantum Physics, but also within Psychosomatic/Mind-Body Medicine with what Dr. John E Sarno calls the Symptom Imperative.

- an Emotional reason for Physical Pain?
I LOVE people who can link the worlds of emotional and physical reality for us so its not so disconnected. Dr Sarno has written many books that challenge conventional western medicine and psychology.
After reading his book, I was able to understand how I could bypass the progression of my Migraines and stop them from occurring and why what I did worked to alleviate many other symptoms my clients have had. WHAT DR. SARNO CALLS The Symptom Imperative operates within a series of disorders that fall within psychosomatic or mind-body medicine and it means that your body keeps creating symptoms until the underlying cause is addressed which is an emotional or spiritual conflict. |
Although it is true that symptoms arise anywhere in the body, in my experience the mind is not random in its choice of where or how the pain or symptom is experienced. Symptoms are often a precise metaphorical reflection of the underlying psychic, spiritual or emotional conflict the person is experiencing.
In his books, The Divided Mind; the Epidemic of Mind-Body Disorders, and the Mind-Body Prescription, Dr. John Sarno breaks the diseases and disorders that fall within Mind-Body Medicine into 2 categories.
Those disorders that are directly induced by unconscious emotions such as pain problems (including, but not limited to back pain and migraine headaches)
Diseases in which unconscious emotions play a role, but are not the only factor,
including
Dr. Sarno has tracked to the repression of emotion through the autonomic-peptide branch of the central nervous system (Sarno, 2006). (Peptides are molecules that participate in a system of inter- communication between the brain the body)
He says:
"The altered physiology in this process that creates the symptoms and physical pain appears to be a mild, localized reduction in blood flow to a small region or specific body structure resulting in a state of mild oxygen deprivation. (Sarno, 2006, p.14-15)
The result is the sensation of physical pain or fatigue.
The tissues that may be targeted by the brain include the muscles of the neck, shoulders, back or buttons; any spinal or peripheral nerve and any tendon. As a consequence, the symptoms may occur virtually anywhere in the body.” (Sarno, 2006, p.14-15)
In short, what Dr. Sarno is saying is that many types of symptoms are caused by mild and benign (meaning harmless) oxygen deprivation to a specific are of the body, and brought on by stress through the central nervous system through repressed emotion.
Dr. Sarno also calls the non-physical diagnosis of Bulimia, Anorexia, Anxiety and depression and OCD as related to the same underlying causes…. And that the psychology behind both the physical and emotional disorders is the same.
